Human resources manager

Human resources managers are responsible for the recruitment, training and development of the staff, are administering salaries, pensions and benefits and are looking after the health safety and welfare of all employees. They are also involved with employee relations, industrial relations, employment law and redundancies among other stuff. Human resource managers also keep up to date with various laws that often change, such as employment law or rights about equal opportunity employment.
Human resource managers have to deal with the whole range of human resource activities and usually work in medium and large sized companies. Their role in small and some medium sized companies is taken by human resource generalist. Both, managers and generalists before they got those jobs, were usually recruitment specialist or recruitment coach. In larger multinational companies there would be various specialists, like one for learning and development or one for recruitment or employee relation.
Human resource manager has a lot of work activities and daily tasks. Primary, their role is to develop human resource planning strategies by taking in consideration immediate and long-term staff requirements. They also recruit staff by preparing descriptions of jobs and adverts for them and how to properly advertise, and shortlist candidates for interview using various selection techniques like psychometric testing. Sometimes they also interview shortlisted candidates. Other work activities include advising on pay and other issues like promotion and benefits, managing payroll and staff records, developing and implementing policies on a variety issues related to workplace (disciplinary procedures, working conditions, absence management, performance management, equal opportunities) and analyzing training needs with line managers, as well as planning and delivering needed training.
Most of larger organizations like, banks, insurance companies, hospital, universities, institutes of technology, factories and many more have human resource managers and generalist, or in some cases even more specialized human resource staff. All of them work typical official hours with occasional extra hours.
To become human resource manager, one should participate in human resource graduate training programs. Master’s degree is not always required and that depends of the company. Also, rarely will one become manager at beginning of the career. The usually route is from recruitment coach/specialist to human resource administrator whose job is to update files and contracts or schedule interviews, to human resource generalist and then a job of human resource manager. It is also recommended to have the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) qualification. This qualification can be obtained by taking certain degree courses and postgraduate courses, or undertaking a CIPD accredited program.
Certain number of skills and qualities is required to become a successful human resource manager. They include good communication and strong interpersonal skills, technical competency and having great business awareness and commercial focus. Manager should also be able to be a leader and have strong management skills, as well as good influencing and negotiating skills. Being ability to analyze, interpret and further explain the legal framework that regulates employment. Most of the managers besides everything mentioned, have amazing decision making and organizational skills.
